Daily Deviation

Given 2009-05-31

.:. Cringed .:. by =X-eltheeb-X is a wonderfully unusual and quite surreal image. The suggester says, "This photo really stuck me. Its one of those things where you know it shouldn't be happening, but can't look away". (Suggested by *CrimsonMeg5002 and Featured by ^RockstarVanity)

Aside from the obvious factors, (fun, humour, timing) this photo has a tremendous luminosity: the fingers, the features of the fish, the glass and the nose, teeth and lips of the child, are all caught in a bath of light, highlighting in parts that add up to a fine moment, frozen in time.
This is a great example of planning and execution. While not crystal clear, the moment exceeds the need for crisp capture, and the result is an engaging, impactful, well-conceived shot, which is above all else, affecting. I would have liked to see the child's eyes as well. Bravo!

This picture did make me cringe - faithful to the title - and then laugh! The moment of capture is absolutely perfect : I'm referring ,of course, to the apparently scared expression of the fish, which absolutely fits the concept of the shot. The appeal of this photo is partly the way it almost personifies the fish, which is in nature the symbol of silence. The focus on the fish just brings the open-mouthed look of the fish to the forefront, and adds both to the horror and humour element. Yet, the blur and the reflections in the glass make it seem at first like an ordinary scene, which adds to the surprise factor of the shot. The mouth opened in the scream is indeed cringe-worthy, reflective of the start anyone would get if they had a fish in their wine-glass! The only improvement I can think of suggesting is to sharpen the edges of the glass to increase the focus of the deviation.

Great work, thanks for sharing! :-)
